- Claim it: Define a unique market niche and claim to be the market leader for this market niche. Have this claim in all you press releases, marketing collateral etc.
- External Analyst: Speak to Gartner, Yankee etc, define your market niche to them, ensure they understand the market definition and cover this market in their analysis as a subsection. They need to recognize you as the market leader for this niche as you help them define it.
- Prospect/Customers: Have your customer blog, comment on the blogosphere and indicate you are a market leader in the market niche.
- Defend it: Once you have claimed the position of the market leader you have to ensure you have the latest features, clearly ahead of the competition. If the customer hears you claim a leadership position and knows of competitors who are ahead of you (and you cannot defend the claim) then you loose credibility. Be very sure you can defend your claim.
- Advertise it: Once you make a claim, advertise it heavily to make sure your prospects and customers see it and this also prevents competitors from claiming it.
